Location selection
Best locations for an ice vending machine
The best site is one where customers need your ice format and can buy it conveniently, with suitable utilities and a workable operating agreement.
Compare likely purchase occasions
| Location | What to validate |
|---|---|
| Gas station or convenience store | Cooler-filling demand, safe parking, competing bagged ice prices and the property owner’s approval. |
| Supermarket or liquor store | Take-home purchases, visibility from the entrance and whether existing freezer sales already meet demand. |
| Marina or fishing area | Bagged-ice demand, loading convenience, seasonal opening hours and exposure to salt or weather. |
| Hotel, resort or community | Guest or resident demand, noise expectations, opening access and who provides local service. |
| Beverage retail or food court | Whether ice cups fit the sales flow, hygiene controls and permission to operate alongside existing businesses. |
These are applications described in our product literature, not evidence that every site in these categories will be profitable. Confirm the specific property and intended use.
Survey each site using the same checklist
- Customer access: visibility, walking or driving approach, parking and a safe pickup area.
- Competition: equivalent bag weight or cup size, real retail price, stock availability and buying habits.
- Utilities: approved power, municipal water, appropriate drainage and reliable network connectivity.
- Machine environment: shade or shelter where required, ventilation, expected ambient and inlet-water temperatures.
- Operating access: space for service doors, bag or cup restocking, filter changes and safe equipment removal.
Record the commercial arrangement
Ask the property owner to define rent or revenue sharing, who pays utilities, opening access, sign permissions, damage responsibilities and how the placement agreement ends. Include these actual costs in the business model.
A rent-free site can still be unsuitable if demand is low or servicing is difficult. A busy location can still fail if customers cannot park, the pickup area is awkward or the installation obstructs other activity.
Run a site-specific go/no-go review
Collect photos and a measured layout, utility information and a conservative daily-sales estimate. Ask the installer to check installation requirements, and use temperature and production planning to assess hot-weather capacity.
Compare candidate sites in the ROI calculator by changing sales, rent and operating costs. Keep the evidence behind each input so you can replace assumptions with actual transaction and service data after launch.
